Captain Dale Winson

Your gateway to confident, capable sailing — from Newport Harbor to the open Pacific.

Dale's teaching draws from over 50,000 miles of real-world sailing — including 10,000 miles exploring the South Pacific, cruising Mexico's Sea of Cortez with his family, and competitive racing aboard championship-winning vessels. When you learn from Dale, you're learning from someone who has navigated challenging conditions, managed diverse vessels, and made countless real decisions far from shore.

With over 400 days captaining charter vessels from 35 to 73 feet, Dale understands exactly what sailors need to know. He builds skills progressively, safely, and enjoyably — whether you're seeking ASA certification or developing expertise for your own adventures.

50,000+ Miles of Open-Water Experience

Dale's teaching draws from decades of offshore sailing — including 10,000 miles in the South Pacific, the Sea of Cortez, coastal Mexico, and offshore racing. This isn't textbook knowledge. It's the hard-won judgment that only comes from real passages in real conditions.

Racing Pedigree Meets Cruising Wisdom

Few instructors combine Dale's competitive racing background — including winning the Transpac race and crewing aboard 80-foot maxi yachts — with his deep family cruising experience. You'll develop both precision technique and practical judgment, in equal measure.

Professional Charter Captain

With over 400 days captaining charter vessels from 35 to 73 feet, Dale knows exactly what sailors actually need to know — and what they don't. He builds skills progressively and safely, whether you're after ASA certification or freedom on your own vessel.

Frequently
Asked

Not at all for Intro to Sailing — we start from zero. For Coastal Seamanship and above, some prior time on the water is helpful but not required. Tell us where you are when you inquire and Dale will suggest the right starting point.
Lessons are priced similarly to private charters since you have exclusive use of PatriciaAnn and the captain. Half-day rates start at $950 on weekdays. Multi-day packages are available at a reduced rate. Contact us for a custom quote based on your goals and schedule.
Yes. Instruction aligns with ASA standards — particularly ASA 101 Basic Keelboat, ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising, and ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran. Dale will structure lessons around your certification goals and discuss the most direct path when you inquire.
All lessons are private — no shared charters with strangers. PatriciaAnn carries up to six guests, so couples and small families are welcome. Instruction is most effective with one to three active students; additional guests can come along as observers.
It's one of Dale's favorite teaching passages. The crossing from Newport to Catalina provides excellent variety — harbor departure, open water sailing, anchoring, and a beautiful destination. An overnight format works best.
Non-slip soft-soled shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and layers — Newport mornings can be cool even in summer. Safety equipment and life jackets are aboard. For longer sessions, bring water and snacks; provisioning can be arranged as an add-on.
